Orchestral & Classical Production Workflow

# Orchestral & Classical Production Workflow

> **Goal:** Produce an orchestral or chamber rendition of a classical (or classically-styled) piece, optionally blending sample libraries with **real instruments** (currently: real clarinet). Distinct from the remix workflows: the source is a *score* or *established arrangement*, not chiptune/tracker data.
>
> **Target projects:** All `Klassik — *` project notes (Die Moldau, Kegelduette, Baermann Romanze, Weihnachts-Oratorium, Kiezer Duette, Pérotin Sederunt).

---

## 1. Phase 1 — Source Selection & Scope

### Key Decisions Up Front

1. **Full work or excerpt?** Large works (e.g. Weihnachts-Oratorium) — pick movements. Small works (e.g. Pérotin Sederunt) — produce end-to-end.
2. **Faithful or arranged?**
   - *Faithful:* strict adherence to score, original instrumentation, original tempo/dynamics.
   - *Arranged:* re-voice for available forces (e.g. reduce full orchestra to chamber forces + clarinet).
3. **Forces available:**
   - Sample libraries: full orchestra, choir, strings-only, etc.
   - Real instruments: clarinet (live player)
4. **Where does the real clarinet go?** Solo lines, exposed doubling, alternative instrument (basset horn in F if needed).

### Deliverable

A short arrangement plan in the project note:
- Section list with bars
- Instrumentation per section
- Where real clarinet is featured
- Tempo map

## 2. Phase 2 — Score Preparation

### Sources for Scores

- **IMSLP** (https://imslp.org/) — public domain scores, free
- **MuseScore** — community scores, often MIDI-exportable
- **Bärenreiter / Henle** — academic editions, paid, most authoritative
- **Wikimedia** — sometimes has public domain scans

### Score → MIDI

Two practical paths:

1. **Existing MIDI from MuseScore / classicalarchives.com** — fastest, but check for errors against score.
2. **Manual entry in MuseScore / Reaper piano roll** — slow but you understand every note.

Always proof-listen the MIDI against a reference recording before orchestration begins.

---

## 3. Phase 3 — Instrumentation & Sample Library Mapping

### Standard Section Templates

| Section | Sample Libraries (typical) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Strings (5-part) | String library with divisi support | Vln 1, Vln 2, Vla, Vc, Cb |
| Woodwinds | Orchestral woodwind library, solo + ensemble patches | Real clarinet for any exposed line |
| Brass | Brass library with mute options | Check ranges carefully |
| Percussion | Timpani + orchestral perc library | Roll samples for timpani |
| Choir (if needed) | Choir library (satb, syllables, wordbuilder) | Pérotin project is the obvious case |

### Real Clarinet Integration

- Record in a dry space with a small-diaphragm condenser (~30 cm from bell, slightly off-axis).
- Track multiple takes, comp later.
- For doubling: keep the sample clarinet low in the mix, real clarinet on top.
- For solos: real clarinet alone, light reverb.

---

## 4. Phase 4 — MIDI Programming

### Realism Checklist

- [ ] **Velocity variation** — never 100 across the board. Use a humanize script.
- [ ] **Timing variation** — small random offset (5–15 ms) per note.
- [ ] **Expression CC (CC11)** — automate volume per phrase, not per note.
- [ ] **Modulation CC (CC1)** — for vibrato depth on sustaining patches.
- [ ] **Breath / bow changes** — leave small gaps at phrase boundaries.
- [ ] **Section layering** — multiple patches per section (e.g. "chairs" + "section" + "tutti") for thickness.
- [ ] **Spatial placement** — match pan to standard orchestral seating.

### Standard Orchestral Seating (Pan)

```
              Audience
                 |
   Vln 1 ──── Vln 2
   Vla ─────── Cb / Vc
   Ww ─────── Brass
        Perc / Timp
```

(Rough pan: Vln1 L, Vln2 center-L, Vla center, Vc/Cb center-R, brass + WW spread.)

---

## 5. Phase 5 — Mixing

### Bus Layout (Reaper)

```
String Bus → EQ + light comp + reverb send
Woodwind Bus → EQ + light comp + reverb send
Brass Bus → EQ + comp + reverb send
Perc / Timp Bus → EQ + comp + reverb send
Real Clarinet → separate bus, less processing
Reverb Bus → orchestral hall IR (e.g. Vienna Mir Placer, or Altiverb / Valhalla Room)
Master → gentle glue comp, limiter, loudness meter
```

### Reverb Strategy

- One **main hall reverb** (long, ~2.5–3.5 s) on a bus.
- One **short room/plate** (~0.8–1.2 s) for close blend.
- Real clarinet gets its own send so the close mic stays present.

---

## 6. Phase 6 — Mastering

- Target loudness: classical repertoire typically **-18 to -16 LUFS** (much quieter than pop/rock). Don't crush it.
- Check on multiple systems, especially headphones and small speakers where classical details can disappear.
- Export 24-bit WAV + 320 kbps MP3.

---

## 7. Per-Piece Considerations

| Piece | Special Notes |
|---|---|
| Die Moldau | Large-scale tone poem; consider excerpt (e.g. opening + main theme) |
| Kegelduette | Likely 2-clarinet original — strong fit for real clarinet overdubs |
| Baermann Romanze | Clarinet solo — real clarinet essential |
| Weihnachts-Oratorium | Large-scale; select movements; choir forces |
| Kiezer Duette | (Confirm composer/instrumentation — likely chamber) |
| Pérotin Sederunt | 4-voice organum — choir library + cathedral reverb |

---
