# Band Cover Production Workflow

> **Goal:** Learn, perform, and produce a full-band cover of an existing song. Distinct from the remix workflows: there is no MIDI extraction, no tracker/source analysis. The work is *learning the song on guitar (and bass)*, *tracking a band*, and *mixing*.

> **Target projects:** Sharp Dressed Man, The Thrill Is Gone, A Horse With No Name, future band covers.

## 1. Learning Phase (TrueFire-Driven)

All three active band-cover projects use the **TrueFire all-access subscription** as the primary learning source.

### Workflow

1. **Find the course/song** on TrueFire (search by song title or artist).
2. **Watch the full lesson** at least once before picking up the guitar.
3. **Learn the structure first**: verse / chorus / bridge / solo. Map it on paper before playing.
4. **Learn the rhythm guitar part** — chord shapes, voicings, strumming pattern.
5. **Learn the bass line** — root notes first, then locked-in patterns, then any fills.
6. **Learn the lead parts / solos** — phrasing, bends, vibrato. Loop short sections.
7. **Practice with the original recording** as a backing track before tracking your own.

Each band-cover project note has a `## Practice Log` section for TrueFire progress. Update after each session.

## 2. Tracking Phase

### Layering Strategy (Two-Guitar Approach)

For dual-guitar songs (Sharp Dressed Man and similar):

### Bass Tracking

- Record DI + amp-sim monitoring.
- Keep DI for re-amping through TONEX later.
- Most important: **tight timing with kick drum** (whether programmed or live).

### Drums

For now, programmed via MIDI + acoustic-kit VST (e.g., ezdrummer, Superior, MT-PowerDrumKit, free options like Sennheiser DrumMic'a).

- Build groove first (kick + snare + hat).
- Add crashes, rides, toms as transitions require.
- Humanize velocity, not just timing.

## 3. Mix

### Static Mix Order

1. Set levels with faders only — no plugins.
2. Pan the dual rhythm guitars (see table).
3. HPF both rhythm guitars (~80–100 Hz).
4. Light bus compression on the guitar group to glue.
5. EQ the bass to leave room for kick and guitar lower-mids.
6. Drum bus processing: parallel compression, light room reverb.
7. Lead guitar sits on top — automate up during solos.

### Reference

Always A/B with the original recording. Match the overall energy and dynamics, not necessarily the exact tones.
