# Clarinet — Technik

> **Fundamental technique work: embouchure, breathing, articulation, finger technique, intonation.**

## Daily Warm-Up (15-20 min)

1. **Long tones** — chromatic downward from C5 (concert B♭4). Hold each note 8-12 seconds, listen for steady pitch and even tone.
2. **Register transitions** — slow scales across the break (chalumeau ↔ clarion), focus on even tone color.
3. **Breathing exercises** — 4-in / 4-out, 4-in / 8-out, 4-in / 12-out. Metronome at 60.

## Embouchure

- Corners firm, chin flat
- Lower lip cushion over teeth, not bunched
- Reed contact: approximate "oo" vowel shape
- Common issues: biting (sharp pitch, thin tone), loose corners (airy tone)

## Articulation

- **Legato tongue:** "thah" or "lah" — tongue touches reed tip, releases cleanly
- **Staccato:** short, light tongue; do not stop air, only interrupt reed vibration
- Exercises: 1-note repeated (quarter → eighth → sixteenth), then scales with varied articulation

## Register-Specific Work

## Intonation

- Notes naturally sharp on clarinet: throat tones (A4, B♭4, B4) — use resonance fingerings
- Notes naturally flat: low E3, F3; high G#6, A6
- Practice with a tuner, but trust your ear first

## Finger Technique

- **Even fingers:** slow scales (60 BPM, 1 note/click) — listen for unevenness
- **Crossing the break:** smooth motion, no "bump"
- **Side keys / chromatic keys:** practice isolated passages
- **Pinkies:** alternate F/C and E/B keys to avoid running out of fingers
